Biography
Ryan Spain is a Republican member of the Illinois House of Representatives, representing the 73rd district in west central Illinois, which includes parts of Bureau, Marshall, Peoria, Rock Island, Stark, and Whiteside counties. Born on October 11, 1982, in Peoria, Illinois, he has served since January 2017, succeeding former Representative David Leitch, and currently holds the position of Deputy Minority Leader. A lifelong Peoria resident, he is married to Ashley and has two daughters, Vivienne and Eleanor. Professionally, he serves as Vice President of Economic Development at OSF HealthCare System, following roles as Vice President of Government Relations there, and previously as the youngest at-large member of the Peoria City Council from 2007 to 2016.
Education and Political Experience
- Education: Graduated from Richwoods High School; earned a double degree in political science and speech communication with Bronze Tablet Honors from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign; holds an MBA from Bradley University.
- Political Experience: Elected to Peoria City Council in April 2007; elected to Illinois House in 2016 and reelected since; served on boards including the Downtown Development Corporation of Peoria and Greater Peoria EDC.
Notable Achievements and Positions
Spain sponsored legislation enabling volunteer work at Illinois State Parks and Trails, and has focused on mental health, hospital and healthcare transformation, telehealth policy, economic development, and job growth. He earned high ratings from the Illinois Farm Bureau , Tooling & Manufacturing Association, and Illinois Health Care Association; received the 2018 Leadership Award for Improving Telehealth Policy from the Illinois Telehealth Initiative; 2024 Legislator of the Year from ABATE; and 2025 Legislator of the Year from the Illinois State Ambulance Association and Illinois Credit Union League.
