Biography
Ryan Michael Fecteau is a Democratic representative for Maine House District 132, covering part of Biddeford. He serves as Speaker of the Maine House of Representatives in his second nonconsecutive term, making him the first openly gay Speaker in Maine's history and, during his first term starting in 2020, the youngest active state Speaker in the United States. Notable achievements include championing a ban on conversion therapy , sponsoring legislation for career and technical education investments, leading bipartisan efforts for Maine's largest housing investment, and recently working on housing policy with Avesta Housing and the Governor's Office of Policy Innovation and the Future. He previously represented District 11 from 2014 to 2022, chaired the Labor, Commerce, Research and Economic Development Committee, and served as Assistant Majority Leader.
Education and Political Experience
- Education: Graduated from the Catholic University of America in Washington, DC; first in his family to earn a college degree as the son and grandson of French-Canadian immigrants, raised by a single mother.
- Political Experience: Elected to the Maine House in 2014 ; served nonconsecutive terms in the 127th, 128th, 129th, 130th, and 132nd Legislatures; elected Speaker in December 2020 and re-elected in December 2024; current roles include chair of the Legislative Council and service on rules committees; resides in Biddeford with his husband and two dogs.
