Biography
Rosa U. Gill is a former Democratic member of the North Carolina House of Representatives, representing District 33 from her 2009 appointment until 2025. A lifelong educator and public servant from Wake County, she served 24 years in education and 24 years in politics, advocating for education, women's and children's issues, healthcare access, and social justice; she chose not to seek reelection in 2024. Notable achievements include her 2024 Vernon Malone Friend of Education Award from WakeEd Partnership.
Education
Gill, a Wake County native, graduated from Shaw University with a degree in Mathematics and pursued further studies at North Carolina State University, North Carolina Central University, and Duke University.
Political Experience
Gill began as a classroom mathematics teacher, student council advisor, and coach for girls’ varsity tennis and track. She served on the Wake County Public School Board of Education from 1999 to 2009, including as Chair and Vice Chair, where she advanced policies for academic success, school integration, busing, student assignment, and a $1 million school bond. Appointed to the NC House in 2009 to fill a vacancy, she won seven consecutive reelections, most recently in 2022.
