Biography
Roger Niello
Roger Niello is a Republican politician currently serving in the California State Senate representing District 6, which includes portions of Sacramento and Placer counties, including the cities of Roseville, Rocklin, Lincoln, and Rancho Cordova.
Born on June 2, 1948, Niello is a Sacramento native and longtime businessman. He is a car dealer and co-owner of the Niello Auto Group, a family business he has helped manage and grow since 1974. He previously served as President and CEO of the Sacramento Metro Chamber of Commerce from 2012 to 2015.
Niello resides in Fair Oaks with his wife, Mary, and together they have five adult children and six grandchildren.
Education
Niello earned his undergraduate degree in Accounting and Information Systems from the University of California, Berkeley and his master's degree in Accounting and Information Systems from the University of California, Los Angeles . He began his career as a Certified Public Accountant, working as a senior staff accountant at Arthur Andersen & Company from 1971 to 1974.
Political Experience
Niello's elected service began in February 1999 when he won a special election to the Sacramento County Board of Supervisors, where he served for five years. He was elected to the California State Assembly in 2004 and served three terms through 2010. During his six years in the Assembly, he was appointed Vice Chair of the Assembly Banking and Finance Committee and later Vice Chair of the Assembly Budget Committee, serving as the key negotiator on budget issues for the Assembly Republican Caucus. He also served on numerous committees including Transportation, Public Employees Retirement and Social Security, and the Joint Legislative Audit Committee.
Niello was elected to the California State Senate in 2022, defeating Democratic challenger Paula Marie Villescaz with 55.7% of the vote. In the Senate, he serves as Vice Chair of key committees including Budget and Fiscal Review, Banking and Financial Institutions, and Transportation. He has focused on fiscal restraint, lower taxes, and accountability for the state's mental health spending. Notable legislative work includes bills addressing gravely disabled person definitions, removing racially charged language from homeowners' CC&Rs, and infrastructure reforms through public-private partnerships.
