Biography
Rodney Pol Jr. is a Democratic State Senator representing District 4 in Indiana, which includes portions of northern Porter County and LaPorte County . Born to a blue-collar family of steelworkers and teachers in Northwest Indiana, he is the first Latino elected to the Indiana State Senate and, at the time of his election, the youngest senator at age 37. He serves as Minority Caucus Chair and holds positions including Vice Chair of the Senate Committee on Ethics and member of the Senate Committee on Pension Management Oversight Interim. Notable achievements include bipartisan legislative successes aiding public schools and veterans, service on the Justice Reinvestment Advisory Council alongside Indiana Supreme Court Justice Christopher Goff, and membership on the Indiana Commission on Hispanic and Latino Affairs. He lives in Chesterton with his wife and two children, and works as City Attorney for Gary.
Education and Political Experience
- Education: Earned a Juris Doctor degree from Indiana University's McKinney School of Law in 2010.
- Political Experience: Worked for public agencies in Indianapolis, including the Indiana House of Representatives, Indiana Department of Education, and Marion County and Indiana Public Defender's Office. Returned to Northwest Indiana in 2014 as City Attorney for Gary. Appointed in 2021 to replace Sen. Karen Tallian; elected that year. Assigned to committees including Pensions and Labor, Local Government, Criminal Law, Public Policy, and Environment. Fellow, Bowhay Institute for Legislative Leadership Development. Platform emphasizes public education, environment, labor, workforce, and protecting vulnerable populations including women and minorities.
