Biography
Senator Rod Hickman
Rodgrick Glenard Hickman is a Democratic state senator representing Mississippi's 32nd Senate District, a position he has held since 2021. A native of Macon, Mississippi, Hickman was born in Shuqualak and represents a district comprising Kemper, Lauderdale, Noxubee, and Winston counties in East Mississippi.
Hickman won a special election runoff in 2021 to replace retiring Senator Sampson Jackson, who endorsed him. He was subsequently re-elected in 2023 without opposition in either the primary or general election. At the time of his election to the Senate, he became the youngest current serving Mississippi Senator.
Education
Hickman earned his Bachelor of Arts from the University of Mississippi and his Juris Doctor from the University of Mississippi School of Law, graduating magna cum laude.
Political Experience
Before his election to the State Senate, Hickman built an extensive legal and public service background. He began his legal career at one of Mississippi's leading law firms before returning to Noxubee County in 2019 to open a law practice. That same year, he was elected the first African American County Prosecutor in Noxubee County's history. He also serves as a part-time prosecutor for Noxubee County and previously worked as a public defender.
In addition to his legislative work, Hickman serves as an adjunct law professor at Tougaloo College and Mississippi University for Women. In the State Senate, he has championed bipartisan initiatives focused on education, affordable housing, economic growth in rural communities, criminal justice reform, public transparency, and workforce development. He currently serves as Vice Chair of the Housing Study Committee and sits on committees addressing local government, judiciary, and energy issues.
