Biography

Robert L. Sanders is a Democratic member of the Mississippi House of Representatives representing District 29 . He assumed office on November 3, 2021, following a special election to succeed Abe M. Hudson Jr., and was reelected to a full term in 2023, now serving his second term. A lifelong Mississippian residing in Cleveland, Sanders has over 28 years in law enforcement—including roles as Chief of Police for the City of Shaw , Chief of Police at Mississippi Valley State University, officer with the Shaw and Cleveland Police Departments, and Internal Affairs Investigator for the Mississippi Department of Corrections—and 16+ years in municipal government as a Cleveland Ward 2 City Councilman . He also served as Sergeant-at-Arms for the Mississippi State Senate , basketball coach, teacher, and professional athlete in Europe and South America. Notable achievements include Vice-Chairman of the House Interstate Cooperation Committee and membership on committees such as Agriculture, Corrections, County Affairs, Education, Ethics, Judiciary A, Tourism, and Universities and Colleges, where he contributes to legislation on criminal justice reform, rural development, education, and economic growth.
