Biography

Robert Tyrone Reives II is a Democratic politician from North Carolina who has served in the North Carolina House of Representatives representing District 54 since 2014. Originally from Sanford, North Carolina, Reives was first appointed to the House in January 2014 and has been re-elected six times, most recently in 2024. District 54 includes all of Chatham County and parts of Randolph County.

Reives currently serves as the House Democratic Leader, a position he has held since December 2020. In this role, he works across party lines and focuses on providing relief to families affected by rising prices while making long-term investments in rural North Carolina. He is recognized for his legislative work protecting children, the disabled, the environment, and property rights, and has sponsored legislation to strengthen public schools.

Prior to his legislative career, Reives worked as an assistant district attorney for the Lee County District Attorney's Office. He is a certified mediator and attorney who approaches legislation with an emphasis on protecting marginalized, vulnerable, and oppressed populations. Reives has received the League of Conservation Voters' Green Tie Rising Star Award and has been endorsed by the NC State AFL-CIO, the North Carolina Association of Educators, and the Sierra Club.

Reives is married to Cynthia Taylor from Goldston and has two children, Brianna and Robert III. He resides in Goldston and is a partner in the law firm Wilson & Reives.
