Biography
Robert Brown Aderholt was born on July 22, 1965, in Haleyville, Alabama, to Mary Frances Brown and Bobby Ray Aderholt. He is a Republican politician and attorney currently serving as the U.S. representative for Alabama's 4th congressional district, a position he has held since 1997. The district encompasses most of Tuscaloosa County north of the Black Warrior River, as well as Birmingham's far northern suburbs in Walker County and the southern suburbs of Huntsville and Decatur.
Aderholt is known as a socially conservative member of the Republican Party and serves as a member of the Tea Party Caucus. He resides in Haleyville with his wife, Caroline. Their daughter, Mary Elliott, married Grant Whitt in March 2025 and lives in Huntsville, while their son, Robert Hayes, attends Auburn University.
Education
Aderholt earned his B.A. from Birmingham-Southern College and his J.D. from Cumberland School of Law at Samford University. He is a product of Alabama's public school system.
Political Experience
Prior to Congress:
Before his election to Congress, Aderholt served as Assistant Legal Advisor to Governor Fob James and as Municipal Judge for Haleyville, Alabama.
Current Committee Positions:
As one of the most influential legislators in Congress, Aderholt is a member of the House Committee on Appropriations, which oversees federal government funding. He chairs the Appropriations Subcommittee on Labor, Health & Human Services, and Education—responsible for the largest non-defense segment of the federal budget. He also serves on the Agriculture Subcommittee and the Defense Subcommittee.
Leadership Roles:
Aderholt chairs the Values Action Team *, a Congressional Member Organization dedicated to promoting families, communities, and religious freedom. He also serves as a commission member of the *Commission on Security and Cooperation in Europe , which monitors human rights in Europe and Central Asia.
