Biography
Rita Mayfield is a Democratic member of the Illinois House of Representatives, representing the 60th district since July 2010. She is a lifelong resident of the Waukegan-North Chicago area, a graduate of Waukegan West High School, and the first African American woman elected as state representative for the 60th district, which includes Waukegan, North Chicago, and parts of Gurnee. With over 20 years in public service, she has volunteered as a reader at the VA Medical Center and serves on multiple community boards, including the Harbor Lites Chapter of The Links, Incorporated, and as a financial instructor for Habitat for Humanity. She has introduced legislation to expand passenger rail services in the Midwest.
Education and Political Experience
- Education: B.S. in Computer Science from Columbia College; M.B.A. and M.S. in Management and Organization Behavior from Benedictine University.
- Political Experience: Appointed to the Illinois House in July 2010 to succeed Eddie Washington; former vice-president of the Waukegan Board of Education; former member of the Waukegan Schools Foundation Board.
