Representative Rita Harris

Jennifer "Rita" Harris is a Democratic member of the Florida House of Representatives representing District 44, which encompasses Orange County. She was born on December 18 in Queens, New York City and moved to Florida in 2002, eventually settling in Orlando.

Harris has dedicated her career to community advocacy and public service. Before entering electoral politics, she worked as an activist and founded the Democratic Women's Club of South Orange County. She also served as vice-chair of the Orange County Democratic Party, roles that demonstrated her commitment to grassroots organizing and community engagement.

Harris is married to John Harris of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and has one child, Anissa. Her recreational interests include arts, graphic design, reading, sports, and writing.

Political Experience

Harris was first elected to the Florida House of Representatives in 2022, defeating incumbent Daisy Morales with 54.2% of the vote . She assumed office on November 8, 2022, and has since been reelected. Her current term extends through 2030.

As a state representative, Harris serves on the Joint Select Committee on Collective Bargaining. She receives an annual base salary of $18,000, with additional per diem rates established by the Speaker of the House. Her legislative work focuses on protecting reproductive rights and addressing practical community needs. She maintains district offices in Orlando and a capitol office in Tallahassee.
