Biography

Renee LaMark Muir

Renee LaMark Muir is a Democratic state representative for Connecticut's 36th District, which encompasses Chester, Deep River, Essex, and Haddam. She was sworn in on January 8, 2025, for her first term in the Connecticut General Assembly.

Muir grew up in Ivoryton and attended Region 4 schools. She has deep roots in her community, having lived in Deep River with her husband for almost 30 years. Beyond her legislative role, she remains actively involved in local governance as a volunteer member of the Deep River Economic Development Commission and Zoning Board of Appeals, and as a member and former chair of the Deep River Democratic Town Committee. She also volunteers as a sexual assault crisis responder for a regional nonprofit organization supporting women and families.

Education

Muir earned her bachelor's degree in criminal justice and master's degree in law enforcement administration from John Jay College of Criminal Justice in New York City.

Political Experience

Before her election to the state legislature, Muir built an extensive career in law enforcement and public policy:

  • Worked as a special investigator for the New York City Department of Investigation, where she focused on investigating political corruption and governmental malfeasance
  • Served with the Connecticut General Assembly's Legislative Program Review and Investigation Committee
  • Worked for the Hartford Police Department as a patrol officer and was promoted to detective
  • Founded Justice Solutions Consulting in 2016, providing data-driven, evidence-based, and cost-effective solutions and reforms to policymakers and criminal justice system administrators
  • Served as a senior policy and research analyst with the Institute for Municipal and Regional Policy at the University of Connecticut

In the state legislature, Muir serves on the Judiciary, Planning and Development, and Public Safety and Security committees.
