Biography
Senator Regina Ashford Barrow
Regina Ashford Barrow is a Democratic State Senator representing District 15 in Louisiana. She currently serves as President Pro Tempore of the Louisiana State Senate.
Regina Ashford Barrow was born in Wilkinson County, Mississippi, and is a resident of North Baton Rouge, Louisiana. She is a proud member of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated. Beyond her work in Louisiana, she has established herself as a national leader through her involvement with the National Black Caucus of State Legislators, Women in Government, and Women in Legislators' Lobby.
Political Experience
Barrow began her legislative career in 2005 when she was elected to the Louisiana House of Representatives, representing District 29. She served three consecutive terms in that position before being elected to the Louisiana State Senate in 2015 to represent District 15, where she continues to serve today.
In the state senate, Barrow serves on several committees including Insurance, Judiciary C, Labor and Industrial Relations, and the Joint Medicaid Oversight Committee. She also serves on the Joint Legislative Committee on the Budget.
Notable Achievements
During her time in the House of Representatives, Barrow authored significant legislation including:
- ACT 264: Provides National Guard members who re-enlist the opportunity to receive free college tuition up to a doctorate degree
- ACT 98: Creates a new economic development district for the North Baton Rouge area
- Mandatory Ethics Training Legislation: Led efforts during the 2007 Legislative Session to require elected officials to participate in mandatory ethics training
- Infant Mortality Prevention: Played an integral role in passing legislation to protect and prevent premature births to reduce infant mortality in Louisiana
- HCR 129: Created a task force to study health services delivery and financing in the Baton Rouge Region
Barrow was recognized with the Regional Legislator of the Year Award for Region 10 in 2015 at the 39th Annual National Black Caucus of State Legislators in Los Angeles, California. She previously served as the executive director of RĪZ Up Louisiana.
