Biography
Reena Szczepanski is a Democratic member of the New Mexico House of Representatives, representing District 47 in Santa Fe County. Elected in November 2022 to succeed Speaker Brian Egolf, she assumed office on January 17, 2023, and currently serves as House Majority Floor Leader, the first Asian American in legislative leadership in New Mexico. A long-time Santa Fe resident, mother, and daughter of immigrants, she has championed public health, drug policy reform, women's leadership, and issues like access to healthcare, economic development, gun violence prevention, and climate change.
Education and Political Experience
- Education: BA in Human Biology from Brown University.
- Early Career: Hepatitis Program Manager for the New Mexico Department of Health; State Director for the New Mexico chapter of the Drug Policy Alliance, leading efforts for medical cannabis legislation, the nation's first drug overdose "Good Samaritan" law, substance abuse prevention, harm reduction, and "Ban the Box" policies .
