Biography

RaShaun Kemp is a Democratic State Senator representing Georgia's 38th Senate District, which includes portions of Fulton County such as Atlanta, Sandy Springs, South Fulton, Fairburn, East Point, Union City, Palmetto, and Chattahoochee Hills. Elected in 2024 and sworn in on January 13, 2025, he is the first openly gay Black man elected to the Georgia General Assembly. Notable achievements include passing his first bill, Senate Bill 93, in his inaugural session—a bipartisan measure signed into law by Governor Brian Kemp to address Georgia's literacy crisis by mandating evidence-based reading instruction training for teachers. Kemp serves on Senate committees including Agriculture and Consumer Affairs, Education and Youth, Government Oversight, State Institutions and Property, and Urban Affairs. Born in Columbus, Ohio, and raised by his great-grandmother, he is Black and Mexican-American, a first-generation college graduate, married to Dr. Ken Kemp, and father to Jaden and Brooklyn; he is a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity and resides in South Fulton.

Education and Political Experience

Kemp earned a bachelor’s degree from Wright State University in 2003 and a graduate degree from Capella University in 2008. His career spans education and public service: high school teacher and principal at age 27 , leadership in a state education department, Government Affairs professional, first Executive Director of a national nonprofit, and current Senior Director at the National Charter Collaborative, amplifying voices of Black and Brown public charter school leaders. Politically, he chaired Atlanta's Neighborhood Planning Unit K, is an alumnus of New Leaders Council Atlanta, and served on boards for Georgia Equality, Ivy Preparatory Academy for Girls, and Lillie’s Foundation; he volunteers in food distributions and community cleanups.
