Randy E. Smith is a Republican representing West Virginia Senate District 14 . He serves as Senate President and Lieutenant Governor, unanimously elected in January 2025 to preside over the 87th Legislature. A former coal miner with nearly 44 years at Mettiki Coal Company, retiring as safety director, he and his wife Patty have owned small businesses. Born March 3, 1960, in Oakland, MD, his interests include hunting and fly fishing. Notable positions include Chair of the Energy, Industry and Mining Committee and Joint Committee on Energy; he previously served as Assistant Majority Whip in the House of Delegates .
