Biography
Ragen Hatcher is a Democratic state representative for Indiana's 3rd House District, which includes portions of Lake County in Northwest Indiana, particularly Gary. She assumed office in 2019 after winning election on November 6, 2018, succeeding Charlie Brown. Daughter of Richard G. Hatcher, the first African American mayor of a major U.S. city , and Ruthellyn Marie Rowles Hatcher, she resides in Gary and is known for advocating economic growth, community development, progress, equality, and opportunity.
Notable achievements include serving as ranking minority member of the House Government and Regulatory Reform Committee, and membership on the Agriculture and Rural Development and Financial Institutions committees. Her prior roles on the Gary Common Council inform her state-level work.
Education and Political Experience
- Education: Bachelor of Arts in Economics, Juris Doctor, and Master of Business Administration from Valparaiso University; Master of Finance from Indiana University Kelley School of Business. Served as faculty at Indiana University Northwest, teaching Urban Studies and African American Studies.
