Biography

Robert John "RJ" May III is a former American politician and Republican who represented South Carolina's 88th House District from 2020 to 2025. Founder and owner of Ivory Tusk Consulting, he previously served as Executive Director of the South Carolina Club for Growth. Married to Beth since 2016, with two children, Bobby and Eden. His tenure ended amid federal charges; in 2025, he was indicted on ten counts of distributing child sexual abuse material, pleaded guilty to five counts, and was sentenced to 210 months in federal prison, plus 20 years of supervision, restitution of $58,500, and lifetime sex offender registration.

Education and Political Experience

  • Education: B.A. magna cum laude, Phi Beta Kappa from the University of South Carolina; M.A. from Tel Aviv University; Rotary Ambassadorial Scholar.
  • Political Experience: Elected in 2020 after winning the Republican runoff and general election for District 88; reelected unopposed in 2024 general with 13,020 votes. Served as vice chairman of the South Carolina Freedom Caucus ; member of the House Agriculture, Natural Resources & Environmental Affairs Committee and its Environmental Affairs subcommittee. Suspended by the House Speaker on June 12, 2025, following indictment and arrest.
