Biography
José “Pichy” Torres Zamora is a Representative at-large in the House of Representatives of Puerto Rico, representing the *Partido Nuevo Progresista *. Born on June 7, 1971, in Jayuya, Puerto Rico, he was raised by his parents, Monsita Zamora González and Ernesto Torres Torres, alongside his two siblings.
Education and Political Experience
Torres Zamora worked for 15 years in the private sector, leading areas in environmental engineering, health, and safety at Baxter in Jayuya. Under his leadership, the company received awards such as Baxter Global's Best Environmental Program and the Puerto Rico Manufacturing Association's Best Environmental Program. His performance as a plant engineer and auditor in countries including Mexico, Costa Rica, the Dominican Republic, and several U.S. states was recognized by Baxter Corporate.
He demonstrated early leadership in the PNP, serving as vice president of Juventud PNP in Jayuya in 1991 and president of the PNP in Jayuya in 2001. From 2005 to 2008, he was a municipal assemblyman. In 2010, he was sworn in as a Representative to fill a vacancy left by Iris Miriam Ruiz, presiding over the Health Commission. In 2012, he was appointed Secretary General of the PNP by then-Governor Luis Guillermo Fortuño. Elected by accumulation in 2016 with the sixth-highest votes, he was chosen by PNP colleagues as Vice President of the House of Representatives. He serves on committees including Calendarios y Reglas Especiales de Debate.
Notable achievements include his contributions to environmental and safety programs, party leadership roles, and legislative service focused on health and government affairs.
