Biography
Phil Steck
Phil Steck is a Democratic Assemblymember representing the 110th Assembly District in New York, which is centered in Colonie. He grew up in the Assembly District he now represents and has deep roots in the local community.
Education
Steck earned his B.A. from Harvard University in 1981, graduating magna cum laude. He went on to attend the University of Pennsylvania Law School, graduating in 1984, where he was a member of the Law Review and Penn's National Moot Court team.
Political Experience
Before his election to the Assembly in 2012, Steck served as an Assistant District Attorney in New York and Rensselaer Counties from 1987 to 1989. He was elected to the Albany County Legislature in 1999, representing the District centered in Menands, and was re-elected three times before winning his Assembly seat.
In the Assembly, Steck serves as Chairman of the Alcoholism and Drug Abuse Committee and is a member of the Health, Insurance, Judiciary, Labor, and Oversight/Investigations Committees. His major legislative priorities include single-payer health insurance , reducing health insurance costs through expanded county self-insured health plans, addressing heavy-handed state administrative practices, implementing a stock transfer tax to support infrastructure rebuilding in Upstate New York, and increasing funding for public education.
Professional Background
Steck joined the law firm Cooper, Erving and Savage LLP in 1990, where his practice concentrates on civil rights and employment law. He is a member of the National Employment Lawyers Association.
