Biography

Phil Ramos is a Democratic Assembly Member representing New York's 6th District, which includes portions of Islip, Bay Shore, Brentwood, Central Islip, and Islandia in Suffolk County on Long Island. Born on April 6, 1956, in the Bronx, New York, his family moved to Brentwood in 1957, making them one of the first Hispanic families in the area; he has lived there for over 60 years. First elected in 2002 after defeating Republican Philip Goglas, he currently serves as Deputy Speaker of the New York State Assembly. Notable achievements include sponsoring the Green Light Law, the Senator Jose Peralta NYS DREAM Act, and a law raising the marriage age of consent to 18; he also helped create Brentwood State Park and secured funding for a spray park.

Education and Political Experience

After graduating from Brentwood High School, Ramos worked as a therapy aide at Pilgrim Psychiatric Center and later as an Emergency Medical Technician. In 1979, he joined the Suffolk County Police Department, serving for 20 years. In the Assembly, he serves on key committees including Ways and Means, Aging, Education, Labor, and Local Governments, and is an executive board member of the Puerto Rican/Hispanic Task Force; he also participates in the Subcommittee on Students with Special Needs.
