Phil Fortunato

Current Position: State Senator

Phil Fortunato is a Republican State Senator representing Washington's 31st Legislative District, which encompasses parts of King and Pierce counties including South Auburn, Bonney Lake, Carbonado, Edgewood, Enumclaw, and Sumner.

Fortunato has been married to his wife, Suzanne, for over 45 years and resides in Auburn, Washington. The couple has five children and four grandchildren. Three of their sons served in the U.S. Marine Corps, with the oldest retiring after 20 years of service.

He is active in his local community through his church, the Knights of Columbus, and various charitable initiatives.

Education and Professional Experience

Fortunato began his entrepreneurial career at age 18, initially operating a commercial landscaping company that evolved from cutting grass for friends and neighbors. He has since founded multiple businesses, including a hydroseeding and landscaping company and Eco-3, an erosion and stormwater management firm.

With over 30 years of experience in erosion control and stormwater management, Fortunato has become a recognized expert in Clean Water Act compliance and environmental regulation. He served as president and founding director of the Pacific Northwest chapter of the International Erosion Control Association. His professional expertise also extends to Davis-Bacon Act compliance, employment security, and international trade issues, with work experience across Europe, Asia, and Canada.

Political Experience

Fortunato previously served as State Representative for the 47th District from 1998 to 2000. He was elected to the House of Representatives in 2016 and subsequently appointed to the Senate before being sworn in. He won re-election in 2022 to a four-year term.

Currently, he serves on the State Government and Elections Committee, Transportation Committee, Housing Committee, and Environmental Committee in the state Senate.
