Peter Francis Welch, born on May 2, 1947, in Springfield, Massachusetts, is an American lawyer and politician serving as the junior United States Senator from Vermont since January 3, 2023. A member of the Democratic Party, he succeeded Senator Patrick Leahy upon his retirement. Prior to his Senate tenure, Welch represented Vermont's at-large congressional district in the U.S. House of Representatives from 2007 to 2023.
