Biography
Michelle Paulene Abeyta is a Democratic member of the New Mexico House of Representatives, representing District 69 . A member of the Navajo Nation from To’hajiilee, New Mexico, she resides there with her husband Chad and their children. Elected in 2024 and serving since 2025 as a lawyer, she advocates for rural and tribal communities, focusing on education, healthcare, infrastructure, economic opportunities, reproductive freedom, and Indigenous women's issues. Notable achievements include nomination for EMILYs List Gabrielle Giffords Rising Star Award and service on the New Mexico Finance Authority Oversight Committee. She currently serves as a Commissioner of the Navajo Nation Bar Association.
Education and Political Experience
Education: Associate Degree in Hospitality & Tourism and certificate in Judicial Studies from Central New Mexico Community College; Bachelor of Arts in Native American Studies and Communication with a minor in Geography from the University of New Mexico; Juris Doctor with a certificate in Indigenous Peoples Law & Policy from the University of Arizona James E. Rogers College of Law.
Political Experience: Lifelong Democrat and Emerge New Mexico Class of 2017 graduate. Prior public service includes To’hajiilee Community School Board of Education, National Native American Bar Association Board, Woman, Infants & Children Board for Acoma-Canoncito-Laguna Service Unit, Canoncito Band of Navajos Health Center Board, and National Native American Law Students Association.
