Biography
Paul Torkelson
Paul Torkelson is a Republican state representative from Minnesota representing District 15B. He lives on Lake Hanska in Brown County with his wife Cindy and two children. Before his legislative career, Torkelson worked as a farmer and is one of a handful of active farmers currently serving in the Minnesota Legislature. As a former teacher and husband of a retired teacher, he brings educational expertise to his legislative work.
Education
Torkelson holds a B.A. in Education from Gustavus Adolphus College.
Political Experience
Torkelson was first elected to the Minnesota House of Representatives in 2008. He is currently serving his 9th consecutive term after being re-elected in November 2022. His district boundaries have changed over his tenure, representing House District 21B and House District 16B before his current assignment to District 15B.
Within the House Republican Caucus, Torkelson holds the position of Assistant Republican Leader. For the 2023–2024 legislative session, his committee assignments included serving as GOP Lead of the Elections Committee and as a member of the Rules and Ethics Committees. He currently serves as Co-Chair of the Ways and Means Committee. Additionally, Torkelson serves on the Great Lakes Commission.
Throughout his legislative career, Torkelson has authored legislation focused on his home district as well as bills related to elections, transportation, environment, taxes, and clean water issues. He is notably pro-life and has consistently supported legislation strengthening protections for the unborn. As an advocate for agriculture, he actively engages in policies supporting producers throughout Greater Minnesota.
