Biography
Senator Paul D. Moriarty

District: 4th Legislative District
Paul D. Moriarty was raised in Salem, Massachusetts and has been a resident of Washington Township in Gloucester County since 1996. Before entering electoral politics, he served as mayor of Washington Township from 2005 to 2008.
Moriarty began his career as an investigative journalist at KYW-TV, where he spent 17 years exposing consumer fraud and investigating unscrupulous or unethical businesses. During his journalism career, he received over 30 Emmy Awards along with honors from the National Press Association, the Associated Press, and the Radio-Television News Directors Association. He has been a member of the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists for 38 years and served six years as an AFTRA shop steward.
Education
Moriarty holds a bachelor's degree in communications from Temple University.
Political Experience
Moriarty was first elected to the New Jersey General Assembly in 2005, representing the 4th Legislative District from 2006 to 2024. During his Assembly tenure, he served as Deputy Speaker from 2018 to 2024 and chaired the Assembly's Consumer Affairs Committee. He also served on the State House Commission from 2012 to 2023.
In the Assembly, Moriarty focused on consumer protection, open government, education funding, and property tax relief. He led efforts to secure an additional $103 million in the state budget for 168 school districts and was a primary sponsor of StayNJ, legislation that reduces senior property taxes by 50% for homeowners earning less than $500,000 annually.
Moriarty was elected to the New Jersey Senate in November 2023 and took office on January 9, 2024. In the Senate, he serves on the Committee on Labor and the Committee on Law and Public Safety. He is married to Lisa and has a daughter, Meghan.
