Biography

Park Cannon is a Democratic State Representative for Georgia House District 58, representing a diverse cross-section of 20 neighborhoods in Intown Atlanta, including the Old Fourth Ward. Born Park Elizabeth Cannon on June 6, 1991, in Georgia, she is a member of the LGBTQIA+ community and one of the youngest lawmakers in the Georgia General Assembly. A Georgia native inspired by civil rights from an early age, she entered politics after being recruited by Rep. Simone Bell to run for the seat in a 2016 special election, which she won. Her legislative focus includes reproductive justice, access to quality health care, housing, education, maternal mortality, HIV epidemic response, and protections for women, children, the elderly, and the LGBTQ+ community. Notable achievements include the 2021 Legislator of the Year award from the National Black Caucus of State Legislators and recognition for leadership. She currently serves as Secretary to the Georgia House Democratic Caucus and on committees such as Creative Arts & Entertainment, Ethics, Human Relations & Aging, Insurance, Public and Community Health, and Urban Affairs. Outside politics, she works as a labor doula and early childhood educator, is fluent in Spanish and conversational in Portuguese, and practices modern dance.

Education and Political Experience

  • Education: Attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, earning a Bachelor of Arts in Hispanic Linguistics and a Bachelor of Arts in Linguistics, with a minor in Women’s and Gender Studies. Completed Executive Education at the Harvard Kennedy School of Government on police accountability and voting rights; named a Bohnett LGBTQ Leaders Fellow.
  • Early Career: After graduation, worked at The Feminist Health Center in Atlanta promoting Black women’s health and lobbying as a health advocate; spent summers in Ecuador, Mexico, Portugal, and the Old Fourth Ward.
  • Political Experience: Elected in 2016 special election to House District 58; re-elected since. Applied for U.S. House candidacy after Rep. John Lewis's death in 2020, reaching top five Democratic contenders. Gained national attention for arrest at Georgia Capitol protesting 2021 voting restrictions .
