Jawaharial "Omar" Williams
Jawaharial "Omar" Williams is a Democratic member of the Illinois House of Representatives representing the 10th district, which covers parts of Chicago neighborhoods including Austin, East Garfield Park, Humboldt Park, Lincoln Park, Logan Square, Near North Side, Near West Side, West Garfield Park, and West Town. He assumed office on May 1, 2019, succeeding Melissa Conyears-Ervin, and has been re-elected in 2020 and 2022. Notable achievements include serving as chairman of the House Committee on Prescription Drug Affordability to lower medication costs, focusing on healthcare access, economic prosperity, safer communities, job opportunities in construction trades, women's reproductive rights, and fair wages.
Born on March 13, 1975, in Chicago, Williams grew up in underserved communities but attended Marshall and Senn High Schools in areas with more resources, inspiring his commitment to equity and service. His stepfather is Walter Burnett Jr., a 27th Ward Alderman. A union member with Laborers' International Union of North America and Plumbers Local 130 UA, he has worked as a precinct captain for Secretary of State Jesse White and Alderman Burnett. Before the House, he served as president of the Young Democrats of Illinois and nationally, and remains a community volunteer prioritizing economic opportunities.
