Biography
Senator Omar Fateh is a member of the Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party , representing Senate District 62 in South Minneapolis, Hennepin County, Minnesota. First elected in 2020 and re-elected in 2022, he is the first Somali American and first Muslim to serve in the Minnesota Senate. A first-generation American, he is the son of Somali immigrants and identifies as a Democratic socialist. He resides in the Phillips neighborhood with his wife, Kaltum Mohamed. Notable positions include chair of the Higher Education Committee and member of the Human Services Committee and State and Local Government and Veterans Committee. His key concerns are health care for all, MN Green New Deal, progressive taxation, transportation justice, and high-quality education. He ran unsuccessfully for Minnesota House District 62A in 2018 and announced a mayoral run for Minneapolis in 2025.
Education and Political Experience
- Education: Master's Degree in Public Administration from George Mason University.
- Political Experience: Elected to Minnesota Senate in 2020 ; re-elected 2022. Previously active with organizations including Neighborhoods Organizing for Change, VoteYes4Kids, 15Now, Minnesota Association of Public Employees, and DFL Somali Caucus. Serves as Ambassador with Change of the Narrative and mentor with Tusaalo Mentoring.
