Biography

Nikki McDonald is a Democratic representative for Kansas House District 49, which includes parts of southern Olathe and Overland Park in Johnson County. She serves as an educator, community organizer, and part-time teacher of Adult English Language Learners at Johnson County Community College, while also owning a small business. Notable achievements include founding the Olathe Public Education Network in 2017 to promote balanced voices in public schools, introducing 2024 legislation to eliminate sales tax on personal hygiene products like diapers and period products, and 2026 bills strengthening DUI laws, addressing Fetal Alcohol Syndrome, and advancing suicide prevention and mental health. She is a strong advocate for mental health services and public school funding, and serves on committees including K-12 Education Budget, Health and Human Services, and the Education Funding Task Force.

Education and Political Experience

McDonald holds a BSE in Elementary Education and an MAT in Childhood Development from the University of Arkansas. She taught public school in Arkansas and Kansas, including English language learners at Fairview Elementary in Olathe. Politically, she worked on campaigns in Johnson County, such as her predecessor Brad Boyd's successful run. Following Boyd's resignation, she was elected by local Democratic precinct committee in a 7-5 vote. She was re-elected in 2024 and is running for re-election in 2026.
