Biography
Nicole Elizabeth Lowen is a Democratic member of the Hawaii House of Representatives, representing District 7 . Born on November 6, 1972, in Washington, D.C., she grew up abroad due to her parents' foreign service careers before settling on Hawaii Island in 1996 as a Kailua-Kona resident. Notable achievements include serving as Chair of the House Committee on Energy and Environmental Protection, founding and chairing the Hawaii Environmental Legislative Caucus, and co-chairing the House Special Committee on Red Hill. She previously served on the Hawaii Invasive Species Council and other boards.
Education and Political Experience
- Education: Attended the University of Pennsylvania for her undergraduate degree; earned a master's in urban and regional planning and a certificate in disaster management from the University of Hawaii.
- Early Career: Worked as a teacher and school administrator at Hawaii Montessori School in Kona; became involved in politics during graduate school studying planning and environmental policy.
- Political Experience: Elected to the Hawaii House in 2012; current roles include Chair, Committee on Energy and Environmental Protection; member, Committee on Commerce and Consumer Protection; and member, Committee on Agriculture. Past roles include member of the Committee on Judiciary and Hawaiian Affairs.
