Biography

Assemblymember Nick Schultz

Nick Schultz is a Democratic member of the California State Assembly representing District 44, which encompasses Burbank, Glendale, La Crescenta, Sunland Tujunga, North Hollywood, Sherman Oaks, Studio City, Toluca Lake, and Valley Village in Los Angeles County.

Born on August 27, 1988, Schultz was raised by a single mother and became the first person in his working-class family to graduate from college. He is married to Allie Apana Schultz, an entertainment industry attorney, and they have two children, Ella and Aiden, and two cats, Liam and Lily.

Education

Schultz earned both a bachelor's degree and a law degree from the University of Oregon, including his legal education from the University of Oregon School of Law.

Political Experience

Local Government

In 2020, Schultz was elected to the Burbank City Council, receiving one of the highest vote totals in city history. He served as Mayor of Burbank in 2023, where he championed policies addressing homelessness, crime reduction, carbon neutrality, and housing affordability, approving over 1,000 new units for low-income Californians.

State Assembly

Schultz was first elected to the California State Assembly in November 2024, winning his district with 65.9% of the vote. Shortly after taking office on December 2, 2024, Speaker Robert Rivas appointed him Chair of the Assembly Public Safety Committee, where he has focused on increasing community safety and building a more equitable criminal justice system.

In addition to chairing the Public Safety Committee, Schultz serves as a member of the Assembly Committees on Budget, Natural Resources, Utilities and Energy, and Budget Subcommittee #6 on Public Safety. He also serves as Policy Chair of the Progressive Legislative Caucus.

Legal Career

Prior to his legislative service, Schultz worked as a Deputy Attorney General with the Special Prosecutions Section of the California Department of Justice. In this role, he prosecuted cases involving public corruption, officer-involved shootings, human trafficking, mortgage fraud, tax evasion, and other financial crimes. He also established a Post-Conviction Review Unit to address wrongful convictions.
