Biography
Nick Fosness
Republican Representative, South Dakota House District 1
Nick Fosness is a lifelong South Dakotan born on May 9, 1978, in the small southeastern town of Tripp. He grew up alongside his two brothers, raised by parents from Wall and Philip who had their own story beginning at Wall Drug. This foundation of family, faith, and hard work shaped his core values.
Fosness married his high school sweetheart, Jenny, at age 19. Together, they built a life centered on commitment, service, and community. They have been married for 28 years and raised four children together. The family lived in Pierre from 2004 to 2012 before relocating to Britton, where Fosness has stated: "We are rural by choice. We love our careers, we love where we live."
Education and Career
After graduating college in Aberdeen, Fosness began his healthcare career at age 21 as a nursing home administrator in northwest Iowa. His wife worked in a hospital lab during this period. Upon returning to South Dakota, the couple settled in Pierre, where Jenny worked in forensics with the Division of Criminal Investigation while Fosness served in human resources and administration at St. Mary's Hospital.
Fosness brings more than 26 years of healthcare leadership experience to his role. He currently serves as chief executive officer of Avera Marshall County Healthcare Center and was the incoming president of the South Dakota Association of Healthcare Organizations.
Political Experience
Fosness served nine years on the Britton-Hecla School Board prior to his appointment to the legislature. In August 2025, Governor Larry Rhoden appointed him to the South Dakota House of Representatives for District 1, filling the seat vacated by Christopher Reder. Fosness was subsequently nominated as a Republican candidate for the District 1 House seat in the 2026 election cycle.
He emphasizes a balanced perspective and commitment to listening to all sides of conversation in his representation. His policy focus draws on his extensive experience in rural healthcare, recognizing the importance of families having access to quality care close to home.
