Biography

Nathaniel Ledbetter

Nathaniel David Ledbetter was born on May 17, 1961, and is an American politician from Rainsville, Alabama. He is a member of the Republican Party and currently serves as the Speaker of the Alabama House of Representatives, a position he has held since January 2023.

Political Experience

Ledbetter began his political career early, winning election to the Rainsville City Council at age 23. He later served as mayor of Rainsville from an unspecified start date until 2002, when he stepped down to pursue management opportunities in the private sector.

Before entering state politics, Ledbetter worked with Sand Mountain Electric Cooperative for 33 years before retiring to run for office. He first ran for the Alabama House of Representatives in 2010 as a Democratic candidate for District 24 but was defeated. Four years later in 2014, he ran again as a Republican and won the seat, representing Alabama's 24th House district, which includes parts of DeKalb County.

Within his first term in the state legislature, Ledbetter pursued a leadership role and was elected Majority Leader in March 2017—notably becoming the first freshman legislator ever elected to that position. He served as Majority Leader for six years until November 2022, when the Republican caucus nominated him for Speaker of the House. He was officially elected Speaker by the full membership on January 10, 2023, succeeding Mac McCutcheon.

Key Accomplishments

Ledbetter has emphasized his pride in improving quality of life for area citizens through local projects and creating jobs for residents in District 24.
