Biography

Nathan P. Small is a Democratic State Representative for New Mexico House District 36, which includes portions of Las Cruces, East Mesa, and Doña Ana County. A third-generation New Mexican from a family of teachers and ranchers, he grew up in El Cerro Mission in a single-wide trailer with a communal well. He is 41 years old, married, a horseman, and lifelong outdoorsman currently working as a Field Representative with the New Mexico Wilderness Alliance, where he has helped conserve the Organ Mountains-Desert Peaks.

Notable achievements include chairing the House Budget Committee since 2023, securing over $100 million to hire police and sheriff's officers, adding $500 million for public schools, repealing New Mexico's outdated abortion ban to safeguard reproductive rights, cutting personal income and gross receipts taxes, eliminating the tax on Social Security, leading bipartisan efforts to save billions of gallons of freshwater and $54.7 billion overall, passing the Healthy Soils Act and Produced Water Act, increasing tax credits for working families and children, providing down payment assistance for first-time homebuyers, and bringing 1,500 paid summer internships to Doña Ana County.

Education and Political Experience

  • Education: Bachelor's degree in Philosophy and English from the College of Wooster.
  • Political Experience: Elected to Las Cruces City Council in 2007 for two terms, where he chaired the Economic Development Committee, led creation of the City's Sustainability Officer position, and focused on economic development and neighborhood care. Elected to New Mexico House of Representatives for District 36 in 2016 . Serves as Chair of the House Budget Committee , Vice Chair of House Appropriations and Finance Committee, and member of House Agriculture and Water Resources Committee and House Printing & Supplies.
