Biography
Nabilah Aishah Parkes , born November 27, 1989, is an American activist and politician from Georgia. A Democrat, she represented Georgia State Senate District 7 from January 2023 until her resignation on March 13, 2026, to focus on her campaign for Lieutenant Governor. Notable achievements include becoming the youngest woman ever elected to the Georgia State Senate at age 32 in 2022, the first Muslim woman, and the first South Asian woman in that body. In 2024, she made history as the first Georgia Senator to give birth while serving. She previously ran for Georgia's 7th congressional district in 2020, earning 12.3% of the vote while advocating for Medicare for All and a $15 minimum wage. Parkes served on the Banking and Financial Institutions and Science and Technology committees, was co-chair of the Georgia Women’s Legislative Caucus, and championed issues like Medicaid expansion, gun safety, eliminating sales tax on menstrual products and diapers, school supply tax holidays, and veteran homelessness solutions.
Education and Political Experience
- Education: Grew up in Norcross and Lawrenceville; graduated from Gwinnett County Public Schools. Daughter of working-class Bangladeshi immigrants, she witnessed her mother's workplace injury, fueling her advocacy for healthcare access.
- Political Experience: Defeated State Rep. Beth Moore in the 2022 Democratic primary and Republican Josh McKay in the general . Sworn in January 9, 2023; resigned March 13, 2026, for Lt. Governor bid. Outspoken against Republican-backed legislation, introduced one-third of Senate gun safety bills, and collaborated across aisles on immigrant passport access. A special election for her District 7 seat is set for May 19, 2026.
