Biography
Munira Yasin Abdullahi ** represents **Ohio House District 9 in Columbus. She is one of the first Somali-Americans and the first Muslim woman to serve in the Ohio State Legislature, and in 2023, she was the youngest serving member. Fleeing Somalia at age three with her parents, she grew up in Columbus as the eldest of nine children and has become a passionate advocate for affordable healthcare—driven by her own type-1 diabetes—equitable education, women's rights, economic growth, and community infrastructure. Notable positions include Vice Chair of the Ohio Democratic Women’s Legislative Caucus for the 135th General Assembly. Her hobbies include weightlifting, martial arts, reading, and soccer.
Education and Political Experience
- Education: Graduated from Columbus Alternative High School; earned a Bachelor's degree in Political Science and International Relations from The Ohio State University.
- Professional Experience: Worked for over a decade with nonprofits on youth development, leadership, and community service; served as programs director for the Muslim American Society; IGNITE National Fellow promoting civic engagement for young women, especially BIPOC women.
- Political Experience: Elected in 2022 after winning her primary ; sworn in for the 135th Ohio General Assembly.
