Biography
Senator Mujtaba A. Mohammed is a Democratic member representing District 38 in the North Carolina State Senate, first elected in 2018. Born on June 8, 1985, in Toledo, Ohio, to immigrant parents from India, he was raised in Charlotte, North Carolina, under modest means, instilling values of family, service, and gratitude. A longtime Charlotte resident, he is a Muslim, married, and raising three children in northeast Charlotte. Notable achievements include defeating three-term incumbent Joel D.M. Ford in the 2018 Democratic primary by double digits, securing 81.74% in the general election, and earning major endorsements; Governor Roy Cooper appointed him to the North Carolina Council on Developmental Disabilities and the North Carolina Task Force for Racial Equity in Criminal Justice. His campaign and legislative priorities emphasize public education, economic diversification, livable wages, tax credits for working families, closing the gender pay gap, affordable health care, independent redistricting, and criminal justice reform.
