Monique R. Chandler-Waterman is a Democratic member of the New York State Assembly representing the 58th Assembly District in Brooklyn. Born on January 14, 1981, she is a lifelong Brooklyn resident and the daughter of Jamaican and Barbadian immigrants. Her district encompasses East Flatbush, parts of Canarsie, Brownsville, and Crown Heights.
Chandler-Waterman brings extensive community service experience to her legislative role. She has served as a Civilian Advisor for the NYPD's 67th Precinct, held leadership positions in local block associations, and directed community outreach for then-City Council Member Jumaane Williams. During the COVID-19 pandemic, she worked as Outreach Director for New York City's Test & Trace Corps, engaging in front-line public health and outreach efforts.
Political Experience
Chandler-Waterman was elected to the New York State Assembly in May 2022 through a special election, winning with approximately 80% of the vote. She succeeded long-time legislator Nick Perry, who was appointed U.S. Ambassador to Jamaica. Her decisive victory reflected strong community support for her platform emphasizing equitable education, affordable housing, expanded health services, and comprehensive public safety solutions.
As an Assemblywoman, she serves on multiple legislative committees including Children and Families, Election Law, Higher Education, Housing, Mental Health, and Small Business. Her legislative achievements include advocacy through the New York State Black Legislative Task Force that helped secure $30 million in state budget funding for under-resourced communities and $8 million for Daniel's Law pilot programs—initiatives designed to implement peer-led, culturally competent responses to mental health and substance use crises statewide.
