Biography

Monika Johnson-Hostler is a Democratic representative for North Carolina House District 33, which covers parts of east central Wake County. She has served in this role since 2025, following her election to the General Assembly. A lifelong advocate for survivors of sexual violence and educational equity, she previously served as Executive Director of the North Carolina Coalition Against Sexual Assault for over two decades, leading statewide efforts to support survivors and prevent violence. Nationally, she served as board president of the National Alliance to End Sexual Violence and contributed to the reauthorization of the Violence Against Women Act through appointments on committees under former President Barack Obama and Attorney General Eric Holder. She ran unsuccessfully for U.S. Congress in North Carolina's 2nd District in 2020. Notable achievements include championing a $548 million school bond as a Wake County School Board member and expanding the district's Office of Equity Affairs to address systemic racism.
