Biography

Monica Kurth

Monica Kurth is an American educator and politician representing Iowa House District 98. Born in 1950 in Cascade, Iowa, she currently resides in Davenport, Iowa. She is a member of the Democratic Party.

Kurth first entered the Iowa House of Representatives in 2017 after winning a special election to fill the seat vacated by Jim Lykam in the 89th district. She was subsequently reelected in 2018 and 2020. Following redistricting, she ran in the 98th district in 2022 and won. She is currently serving her fifth term in the Iowa House. She has announced that she will not be seeking reelection at the end of her current term.

Education

Kurth graduated from Aquin High School in Cascade, Iowa. She earned a bachelor's degree in mathematics from Mount Mercy College and a master's degree in counseling from Northeast Missouri State University in Kirksville. She also pursued further education at the University of Iowa in social work and education.

Political Experience

Before entering electoral politics, Kurth worked as a counselor and therapist at the Rock Island Youth Guidance Council in Rock Island, Illinois. She served as a counselor and director of the Student Support Services program at Scott Community College, where she also taught developmental mathematics as a faculty member.

In the Iowa House, Kurth serves as the ranking member of the Ethics Committee. She also serves on the State Government, Ways & Means, Labor, and Environmental Protection committees. Additionally, she is a member of the Quad Cities Interfaith and Progressive Action for the Common Good, and serves on the Scott County Democratic Central Committee.
