Biography
Mike Sexton is a Republican who represented Iowa House District 7 in Calhoun County from 2014 until his resignation. Born on August 22, 1961, in Fort Dodge, Iowa, he is a fourth-generation family farmer, environmental consultant, and entrepreneur raised and residing in Rockwell City. He is married to Becky, with four sons, one daughter, and nine grandchildren. Sexton resigned from the Iowa House effective immediately after accepting an appointment as State Director for USDA Rural Development in Iowa under President Donald Trump; he previously served as Chair of the House Agriculture Committee.
Education and Political Experience
- Education: Graduated from Rockwell City High School; earned an A.A.S. in agribusiness from Iowa Lakes Community College.
- Political Experience: Elected to the Iowa House in 2014, serving his first term there after one term in the Senate; resigned upon taking the USDA role. Served on boards including South Central Calhoun School Board, Iowa Association of School Boards, Iowa Cattlemen’s Association, and Calhoun County Farm Bureau.
