Biography
Mike Sells is a Democratic politician who served in the Washington House of Representatives from 2004 to 2023, representing the 38th district . Born on July 28, 1945, in Seattle, he built a reputation as one of Washington's most progressive lawmakers, chairing the Labor and Workplace Standards Committee for over a decade and advocating for working families.
Education and Political Experience
Sells served 17+ years in the House, focusing on labor issues. Notable achievements include reforming Unemployment Insurance, modernizing Workers’ Compensation, strengthening workplace safety standards, creating internship and apprenticeship opportunities, and establishing Paid Family Medical Leave. He was particularly proud of creating the Washington Aerospace Training & Research Center at Paine Field, bringing a Bachelor of Science Nursing program to Everett Community College via the University of Washington Bothell, and establishing WSU Everett. He announced his retirement in 2022 and did not seek reelection.
