Biography
Mike Schatz
Mike Schatz was born on March 28, 1952, and is a Republican member of the North Dakota House of Representatives representing District 39. He resides in New England, North Dakota, and is a retired educator and rancher. Schatz is married to Patti, a sixth-grade teacher, and has four children and four grandchildren.
Throughout his career, Schatz has held diverse professional roles including former farmer and rancher in Hettinger and Slope Counties, social studies teacher, head football coach, and oil field truck driver. He previously served as executive director of the North Dakota Republican Party.
Education
Schatz holds a Bachelor of Science degree in History and Physical Education from Minot State University, with an additional 101 post-graduate hours of coursework.
Political Experience
Schatz's legislative career spans multiple decades. He initially served in the North Dakota House of Representatives from 1989 to 1990 and has served continuously since 2009. He currently serves on the House Appropriations Committee in the Education and Environment Division. Previous committee assignments include Education , Transportation, Agriculture, Natural Resources, and State and Federal Government.
Beyond the legislature, Schatz served on the Education Standards & Practices Board for six years and held the position of president of the New England Park Board for 17 years. He is a lifetime member of the North Dakota Coaches Association and was inducted into the Coaches Hall of Fame. As a football coach, he achieved four state championships and was a finalist for National Coach of the Year.
