Biography

Michael J. Moran is a Democratic state representative for the 18th Suffolk District in the Massachusetts House of Representatives, a position he has held since winning a special election in April 2005. A Brighton resident, he currently serves as House Majority Leader, having previously been Second Assistant Majority Leader, and has chaired the Joint Committee on Election Laws and the Special Joint Committee on Redistricting.

Education and Political Experience

  • Education: Earned a BS from the University of Massachusetts Boston .
  • Political Experience: Elected in 2005, Moran advocates for immigrant communities, health care access, domestic workers’ rights, and fair representation. As Redistricting Committee Chair, he created Massachusetts' strongest majority-minority Congressional district and doubled majority-minority state House districts to 20, including the first represented by a Cambodian-American legislator. He secured funding for Census outreach , MIRA’s Welcoming Spaces project , and supported the Charles River Community Health Center. On elections, he advanced laws for temporary U.S. Senate vacancy fills, overseas military voting, early voter registration for 16-year-olds, and early voting.
