Biography
Mike King
Mike King is a Republican member of the Kansas House of Representatives, representing District 74 since January 2025. He is a fourth-generation Kansan from Hesston, Kansas, where he has deep roots in construction and entrepreneurship. King is married to his wife Peggy and has four children. His personal values center on faith and family, with Hesston Mennonite Brethren serving as his home church.
Education
King earned a degree in building construction from John Brown University in 1981.
Political Experience
Before his legislative service, King held a prominent position in state government as Kansas Secretary of Transportation from April 2012 to July 2016 under Governor Sam Brownback. During his tenure, he led the Kansas Department of Transportation and its 2,400 employees. His responsibilities expanded in July 2013 when he also became Director of the Kansas Turnpike Authority.
Prior to public service, King owned King Enterprise Group, a central Kansas construction company, for more than 20 years before selling it in 2012 when he took the transportation secretary position. In the state legislature, he currently serves on several committees, including the Committee on Commerce, Labor and Economic Development, Committee on Financial Institutions and Pensions, and Committee on Social Services Budget, among others.
