Biography
Senator Mike Jones represents District 15 in the Virginia State Senate, covering parts of Chesterfield County and Richmond City. Born on July 14, 1967, in Portsmouth, Virginia, he is a pastor and public servant who won a special election on January 6, 2026, to succeed Lt. Gov.-elect Ghazala Hashmi, helping maintain Democratic control of the chamber. Notable achievements include leading efforts to remove Richmond's Confederate monuments, founding the Village of Faith ministry in 2005, launching the Cars 4 Christ program to donate over 65 cars to single mothers, annual Thanksgiving turkey giveaways, and developing affordable housing on church property. He previously served as Richmond City Council President, advocating for equitable economic development during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Education and Political Experience
Education: B.A. in Sociology from University of Colorado, Boulder ; Master of Divinity from McCormick Theological Seminary, Chicago; Doctor of Ministry from Virginia Union University.
Political Experience: Elected to Richmond City Council in 2016, re-elected in 2020, and served as Council President until resigning December 31, 2023. Elected to Virginia House of Delegates in 2023, serving until December 9, 2025, on committees including Communications, Technology and Innovation; Counties, Cities and Towns; and Labor and Commerce. Currently serves in Virginia Senate on committees including Agriculture, Conservation and Natural Resources; Privileges and Elections; Rehabilitation and Social Services; and Transportation.
