Mike Groene was born on August 10, 1955, in Nebraska. He graduated from the University of Nebraska–Lincoln in 1977 with a Bachelor of Science degree in agricultural economics. Groene began his professional career working for Brothers Equipment Company, a dealer in agricultural implements, and later co-founded the Western Nebraska Taxpayers Association, advocating for lower taxes. In 2014, he was elected to the Nebraska Legislature, representing the 42nd District, which includes North Platte. During his tenure, he served as chair of the Education Committee from 2017 to 2021. In February 2022, Groene resigned from the Legislature following allegations of inappropriate conduct involving a legislative aide. ,
