Biography
Mike Derby is a Republican representative for District 34 in the South Dakota House of Representatives, serving Pennington County. Born around 1957, he is a businessman and owner of Canyon Lake Resort in Rapid City. He previously served three terms from 1997 to 2002 and was re-elected in 2020, assuming office on January 12, 2021. Notable achievements include chairing the House Committee on Appropriations, serving as vice chair of the Appropriations Committee in his first tenure, chairing the Military Affairs Committee and Ellsworth Task Force, and vice chairing the South Dakota Legislative Executive Committee. He has also been past chair of the Rapid City Area Chamber of Commerce, a Visit Rapid City board member, and involved in national organizations on economic and cultural development.
Education and Political Experience
- Education: Earned a BS in Business Administration from the University of South Dakota. Attended Meadowbrook Grade School, West Junior High, and Stevens High School in Rapid City.
- Political Experience: First served in the South Dakota House from 1997 to 2002 during the Janklow administration. Returned in 2021, succeeding Michael Diedrich. Currently chairs the House Committee on Appropriations and serves on the House Committee on Legislative Relationships. Married to Carmen with two daughters and four grandchildren.
