Biography
Michael W. Chippendale is a Republican representing District 40 in the Rhode Island House of Representatives since his election in November 2010. Born April 25, 1969, in Providence, Rhode Island, he has served as House Minority Leader since June 2022, after previously holding the role of Minority Whip since November 2018; he was unanimously re-elected to the position in December 2024. Notable achievements include his strong electoral performance, winning 69.2% of the vote in the 2024 general election, and community involvement such as coaching youth baseball for 15 seasons, serving 14 years on the Foster/Glocester Juvenile Hearing Board, and 30 years as a member of the Highland Rod and Gun Sportsman Club. Prior to politics, he owned a custom manufacturing business and served as a lector and religious education instructor at St. Paul the Apostle Church. He currently sits on key committees including Oversight, Corporations, Conduct, and the Permanent Joint Committee on Healthcare Oversight, and as Minority Leader, he is an ex-officio member of all House committees.
Education and Political Experience
- Education: Graduated from Johnston High School; studied at the Community College of Rhode Island ; earned a degree in Electro-Mechanical Drafting/Engineering from New England Institute of Technology in 1989; later studied business management at Johnson & Wales University starting in 2004.
